Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
