The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being considered a flight risk
The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
